Perhaps the central doctrine of Christian Evangelicalism is that of the kinsman-redeemer. It is an Old Testament institution. Teachings which weaken the Old Testament, in turn, weaken Christianity.
The institution emerges from the late Bronze Age period – the time of Abraham – as indicated in the Hammurabi Code, but then is codified in the Mosaic Law. This study demonstrates its abiding validity in human society because the psychology and science of human action requires it.
Our complex state and corporate structures may seem to be adequate substitutes, but a return to a state of nature – which a worldwide calamity would require – will quickly reveal their clumsiness and inefficiency.
